BAD DAY TO BE A POLICEMAN IN INDIA!!

April 7, 2009

Having been forced to stay in bed with a severe flu/cold, and hating being sick, I decided to distract myself for a few minutes. I was reading the Wall Street Journal about Obama flashing his pearly whites in London trying to look like the Ultimate Supreme Leader of the Free World, only his world is not so free anymore..(content for another blog), when I came across this treasure.

GAUHATI, India — Two bombs ripped through crowded markets in India’s restive northeast Monday, killing at least seven people and wounding 60 others, while a grenade attack left two police officers injured, police said.

Onlookers and police surround damaged bicycles and motorcycles at the site of a blast in Maligaon area in Gauhati, India, Monday, April 6, 2009.

The blasts came a day before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was scheduled to visit the region while campaigning for national elections that begin later this month.

Authorities suspected the separatist United Liberation Front of Asom was behind the attacks, which came less than a week after a deadly blast in Gauhati, the capital of Assam state, said G.M. Srivastava, the state’s top police official.

“This is a coordinated attack,” said Mr. Srivastava.

The blasts occurred on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the founding of the militant group, which has been linked to many acts of terrorism in Assam and usually stages attacks around this time of year.

The first bomb was likely tied to a motorbike and exploded in a crowded market in Gauhati, killing seven people and wounding at least 56, said Mr. Srivastava. The blast left several cars on fire amid piles of smoldering wreckage.

After the immediate panic subsided, angry crowds threw stones at police officers who they said were slow to arrive at the scene and had failed to protect the public.

Hours later, a second bomb, this one tied to a bicycle, went off in a market in the town of Dhekiajuli, 130 miles north of Gauhati, Mr. Srivastava said. At least four people were wounded, he said.

…If you would like to read the whole article, please use the link, but they had me at “threw stones at police officers”…

Now, THAT is a government, for the people, of the people and by the people… if you are slow to arrive, YOU WILL BE STONED!!!

Side note: Take a look at the picture accompanying the article – thousands of people gathered to look at the demise of the burnt shells of motorcycles long after the bodies have been removed. Those Assamese militants would have had a field day had the previous bombs just been practice sessions, and the real fireworks started after the crowd had gathered!

If you read further in the article, it says “Later in the day, suspected militants threw a grenade at a police station in the town of Mankachar on the India-Bangladesh border, said local police official Bhartha Mahanta. Two police officers were injured, one of them critically, Mr. Mahanta added.”

WHAT A DAY TO BE A COP IN INDIA!!!

First, you get stoned for showing up late…(which is what they usually do in all Indian movies – show up late), then you get blown up in your office!!! Sheesh!
